Independent Medical Clinics Applaud Throne Speech
Healthcare Review Called a "Breakthrough"
Vancouver, BC,

The Canadian Independent Medical Clinics Association (CIMCA) today called the Throne Speech a potential "breakthrough" in provincial health care reform.

"We applaud the Campbell government for its leadership and courage in tackling healthcare reforms and making it a top priority for this legislative session," said Dr. Brian Day, Orthopedic Surgeon and President of CIMCA.

"The questions contained in yesterday's Throne Speech are a good starting point to stare down the myths of the Medicare monopoly and embrace competition and patient choice of public and private healthcare delivery," said Day.

Day said that British Columbians are now ready to explore alternatives to health care delivery and financing. A recent poll commissioned by CIMCA in January 2006 found that over 7 out of 10 Canadians favoured the Supreme Court decision allowing supplementary private health insurance and care, while less than 2 out of 10 viewed the decision as unreasonable.

"It is clear that British Columbians are saying yes to choice and it's refreshing to see that the BC government is responding to that call," said Zoltan Nagy, Executive Vice-President of CIMCA.

CIMCA says the objectives of the proposed health care review should strive to:

  • deliver health services in a timely manner and eliminate wait lists altogether

  • provide high quality patient care and to ensure the highest professional and ethical standards

  • give patients the choice of public and private healthcare delivery, financing and insurance

  • promote innovation and the introduction of new technology

  • promote the responsible and efficient use of public resources through performance measures of medical procedures and through competition with the independent sector

CIMCA is a not-for-profit organization that represents medical clinics, health care workers and patients. Its mission is to promote improved access to high quality and timely health care for all Canadians.
